If you regularly lift weights and have built up significant strength, taking 500 milligrams of shilajit daily could enhance your performance. This effect may be linked to shilajit’s ability to reinforce collagen structures within your muscles, leading to improved workout results.
In 2019, researchers at the University of Nebraska conducted a study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, which was funded by Natreon Incorporated, the makers of PrimaVie shilajit. The study involved 63 male students, divided into three groups. One group received a placebo for eight weeks, while the other two groups were given 250 mg and 500 mg of shilajit daily. The shilajit used in the study came from the sponsoring company, Natreon.
Before and after the supplementation period, participants performed leg extensions to failure. Researchers measured their strength during these exercises both before and immediately after the session.
The results showed no statistically significant improvement in overall strength loss due to supplementation. However, when the data was analyzed specifically for the top 50% of the strongest participants, there was a noticeable and significant positive effect from the shilajit supplementation.
The figure below illustrates how shilajit may reduce strength loss during exercise, showing the difference in blood hydroxyproline levels before and after supplementation. Notably, the researchers only focused on the top 50% of participants with the highest hydroxyproline levels to highlight the effects.
Hydroxyproline is a key component in the formation of collagen structures. Low levels of hydroxyproline might suggest that anabolic activity is occurring in connective tissues.
